Madras, Nalla Madras!

The Chennai Corporation has finally decided to beautify the city and build infrastructure before it gets out of hand.

They have done some amazing things already. Though everyone complains (and will continue to do so) non-stop, we are soon going to be thankful for all the flyovers being built. Especially when the traffic is intense. Flyovers ease traffic congestions, so be happy folks.

Another wonderful thing they are doing is removing all illegal billboards! I really didn't think I would ever see this in my lifetime. Chennai is looking cleaner and greener already. They work at nights and remove the boards and hoardings. And then people complained that the signs had brought extra lighting to the roads, so they installed lights (in the Gemini Circle alone, they have spent 13 crores on lighting!). And now it looks amazing. Clean.

They have also decided to BROADEN roads! Can you believe that where they have found they cannot deal with the traffic congestion any other way, they've decided to just move all walls bordering the road by 5 feet. I think that's amazing - and every single person has complied. The roads are already more navigable.

I'm so happy that I get to see and enjoy all these improvements. My congratulations - everyone really is trying. Madras, Nalla Madras (Madras, Nice Madras).

A good beginning to beautify the city. When are the city walls and flyovers are going to be free from posters and political write ups ?

i'm certain they are on the right path, so its just a question of time... :)

I had never though that any metro in India would clear out all billboards.

Chennai has taken the lead and we have to appreciate the efforts taken by the corporation.

Flyovers are also the only way to deal with increasing traffic in places where there's no place for anything to be added horizontally :)

As a person from cochin, I envy the steps taken by the corporation here and only hope that other places take a cue from Chennai (specially cochin).

I totally agree - Hurrah for Chennai - and I hope lots of cities follow suit - especially Bangalore.

Arundathi,

I do remember visiting your blog long back when I was mooning around the webspace checking blogs from Chennai.

I guess you would have visited
www.thankyoucheifminister.com

The more the billboards fall, the more flyovers were built, the more the Govt progresses towards completion of Desalination Plant, the more the MRTS are made available, the more thanks the Govt is going to receive.:-) :-)

I don't know whether you have seen the ad related to IPL played at Satyam hall(before screening the film) a few months before, but it is one of the best ads so far I had ever seen.

Chennai Super kings batsman comes on the pitch with a toothpick in his mouth moving it from one side to the other. The Opponent releases the ball and all of a sudden the batsman says "Iru"(stop) the ball comes to a halt and he asks the spectators "Enga Venum"(Where do you want?),spectators says "Sixer",then the batsman says "Release" and hits the ball to a SIX.And one more thing they have a huge cut-out of the batsman duly garlanded in the Stadium. Lol,Lol.......

I guess you might be wondering is this a comment or Essay....Lol....

Nice blog, looking forward to your next posting.

Well, as a foreigner working in Chennai, I can tell you I was very pleasantly surprised to now see a landscape in chennai. I was getting used to these huge billboards and now that they are gone, I can see the rivers, the trees and the buildings... chennai appears more airy ...

I know! Everyday I am so surprised to be able to see trees and buildings and rivers and NO billboards. Looks like Chennai 10 years ago and I'm loving it.
